Some annuals for a particularly hot and sunny location would include marigolds, zinnias, sunflowers, flowering vinca, tithonia, annual salvias, portulaca and dusty Miller. In most cases proper soil preparation is at least as important as the plant selection. Adding copious amounts of organic matter will help "feed" the soil so it is healthy and able to hold both air and water, making it available to the plants over a longer period. Using a mulch will also help extend the time between waterings. Proper watering technique is also important. A deep soaking when the soil tests dry with your finger (usually about every fifth day) is preferable to a daily light sprinkling. These pointers would generally hold true for annuals or perennials in sun or shade.
