White Bugs On Gardenia - Knowledgebase Question

My mother has a beautiful gardenia from the summer that she was told to bring in the house and place in a bright area. She did that and has been taking good care of it. It actually started to get some buds on it already. Now this week there are some type of bugs showing up all over it. They look black on one side and white on the other. Do you know what she should do? She would hate for the gardenia to be ruined.

Congratulations on doing such a great job with the gardenia -- they are not easy to keep under normal household conditions! Unfortunately, based on your description I am not certain which insect is infesting the plant. I would suggest you quickly take a sample to your County Extension (560-4150) for specific indentification and suggested controls. In the meantime you might try dislodging them with a good spray of tepid water -- but take the sample first.
