|We are renting a house in NYC suburbs for the next two years. After 10 years of rooftop container gardening, I'm contending with deer! Since we don't own this house and won't been living here that long, I want to focus on planting annuals. The deer resistant lists I'm finding seem to focus on shrubs and perennials (understandable for the typical homeowner!) I'm hoping you can point me to any other lists that might have been annual content, or suggest things to me... particularly looking for self-sowing for year two, and vines!
|Unfortunately there is no tried and true list because deer seem to learn to expand their tastes to plants that are available in their area. So for example plants they have not learned to eat in California may be at the top of the preference list in New York! In my experience the only truly reliable solution is a fence, although some gardeners report success using either home made pepper and/or garlic based or commercial repellents. However, you could also talk to your new neighbors and local garden center staff and find out what the local deer seem to prefer and avoid those plants. Good luck!|
