I am growing hydroponic tomatoes for a science report. I was just wondering what "ponics" means (I already know that "hydro" means "relating to water").

The name hydroponics comes from the Greek "hudor" for water and "ponos" for work, therefore the word hydroponics means "waterworking".

The modern concept is that hydroponics means growing plants without soil. However, a more accurate definition is growing plants by supplying all necessary nutrients in the plants water supply.
