I want to take a year off from vegetable gardening. What I'd like to do is plant the whole garden with wildflowers. Will I have problems the following year with excessive weeds a.k.a. wildflowers. Can you foresee any other problems that could arise from this practice? |
Many wildflowers are self-sowing, but if you deadhead them before they go to seed, or collect the seed yourself for another use, that will eliminate some of it. Next year you could also water the empty garden thoroughly to get seed to sprout, and then pull or turn under the seedlings before you plant your vegetables. I don't see any other problems--it sounds like a fun idea! Wildflowers also attract pollinators, so you might want to plant a tiny corner of your veggie garden with wildflowers to help pollinate the vegetables. Good luck! |
