My mother lives in Houston, TX. A lady at work gave her some seeds (pits?) from some dates. Is there anything special that she needs to do to make them grow?

The Dates you buy are the fruit of Phoenix dactylifera, an attractive Palm with stiff leaves and narrow leaflets. Plant the stone vertically in moistened potting soil so that the top is about 1/2 inch below the surface. Keep it warm (70F) until germination takes place. Be patient - it may take up to 3 months! Keep the plant fairly cool in winter (50-55F) and repot it every year. Your Date stone can grow into a stately 5' palm tree.
