Corn is a heavy feeder so you don't want your companion plants to be competitive. Pole beans are sometimes grown at the base of corn stalks, providing a convenient support for the beans. The beans in turn help nurture the corn by trapping and releasing nitrogen. Some seasoned gardeners swear that planting squash around the corn keeps raccoons from raiding the corn patch.

Why not try a combination of corn, beans and squash and see how well they get along in your garden?
