English ivy (Hedera helix) can be grown in all kinds of soil and can survive for a long time in a vase as a houseplant. Its speed will depend on the overall growing conditions including light, moisture and nutrients. In poor conditions it may barely grow at all but in better conditions it can be pushed into faster growth. Depending on the variety it might grow between a few inches and a few feet a year.
