We've recently decided to add a deck to our house which will cover over a garden area filled with lilies of the valley. Will the pips survive if I dig them up now (in the middle of winter) or would I be better off waiting until after the construction is done and salvaging what I can in the spring? |
If the ground is not frozen you could dig the pips and and replant immediately or set them in pots kept in a sheltered but very cool location so they stay dormant. If you replant, water them in and mulch them well to try to protect them from frost heaving. Given the choice it would probably be better to wait until spring; if the ground is frozen then you will be forced to wait. |
