My wife and I will be moving to Guayaquil, Ecuador in March. I am an avid fruit and vegetable gardener but I know little or next to nothing about gardening in a tropical coastal region. Do you know of any books or online resources where I could learn about vegetable/fruit gardening in the tropics??

How exciting! It sounds like a wonderful adventure! Here are some resources that might interest you:

You might enjoy the web site of the California Rare Fruit Growers: http://www.crfg.org/

Also, Oregon Exotics Nursery has a really interesting, informative catalog (I don't see any mention of a web site, however) with fruits from all over the world. You can reach them by phone at 541-846-7578

Books dealing with gardening in southern Florida might be helpful, such as "Warm Climate Gardening" by Barbara Pleasant (Storey Communications), "Florida Home Grown" by Tom MacCubbin (Sentinal Communications), or "Vegetable Gardening in Florida" by James M. Stephens (Univ. Press of Florida, www.upf.com).

Also check out the Texas and Florida Cooperative Ext. web sites:

I hope this helps!
