What would cause the killing of pansies at the stem? Not rabbits; they seem to chew the leaves and flowers. This is at the base of the stem and the plant looks wilted/hasn't been watered (but that's not the case).

If you've ruled out critters, the damage may be due to adverse weather or mechanical injury. If not, perhaps the plants have developed a fungal disease. You can prune or pinch out the damaged parts of the plants to encourage new, healthy growth. Try to keep water off the stems and foliage, and provide good air circulation all around the plants to promote better health.

Hope your pansies perk up soon!
