I am new to the Houston area and would like to place some larger plants in containers to brighten up our courtyard. Any suggestions as to what would do well, especially considering how hot the summers can get here?

Jennifer,

Some of your many options of larger plants for container color during the warm season include Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Allamanda (a vine), Mandevilla (a vine), dwarf Canna ('Tropicana' is a good choice), 'Gold Star' Esperanza (Tecoma stans), a dwarf or shrub type rose (some good choices are 'Marie Pavie' and 'Nearly Wild') and Copper Plant (Acalypha).

Thanks for the question and good luck with your new courtyard project!
