| When is the best time to start planting jasione seeds in our zone? Does it have any specific time requirement if started in a greenhouse (when is the ideal time to start it this way) and does the soil have to be acidic or basic? Any other suggestions? How long does it take if grown in the greenhouse and then after what time period should plants be transplanted outdoors? I just purchased Burpee seeds and would like to start soon (in my greenhouse) if this is not too early. |
| For best results, sow seed of jasione in peat pots 8-10 weeks prior to your planned transplant date. You can transplant them before your last frost date -- they adapt better while the soil is still cool. You can also direct-seed them in early spring prior to your last frost date, if you wish. To sow the seed indoors, just cover them with moistened seed-starting mix. They'll germinate in 10-25 days when the soil is kept at 70F. When you transplant the seedllings, space them 8-12" apart in the garden bed. Jasione prefers a slightly-acidic (pH 6.0-7.0) well-drained, sandy soil in full sun to part shade. Mulch the soil lightly to preserve soil moisture and to keep soil cool. Don't feed them much or they'll grow lank and spindly. I don't see jasione for sale in the Burpee catalog. If you purchased seeds for other plants from Burpee, follow the planting guidelines on the seed packets for best results. Enjoy! |
