I normally plant petunias, but the slugs at our new home eat them. I have tried every thing I can, so now I want to plant something new. Will slugs eat Gazanias? Or is there something that would work better in a flower bed with full sun to only slight shade? |
Slugs will eat almost anything, gazanias included. They're not especially fond of Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis), though, so it might be an alternative for you. Vinca, Ajuga and Pink Panda strawberries are great hiding places for slugs, but they rarely nibble on the plants. Slugs don't like ornamental grasses, either, and your sunny bed would be perfect for them. To reduce the slug population in your garden try picking them up and disposing of them before they have a chance to lay eggs. You can skewer them with a sharp stick or pick them up with a gloved hand. The native slugs (sometimes called banana slugs) are actually beneficial. If you find any, toss them into a wooded area where they can feed on decomposing debris on the forest floor. |
