| I have been told to put sown lavender seeds in full sun and they will germinate in 4 weeks. (The seeds are in "seed starter mix" and in flats.) I have also been told to put the same in darkness to get the seeds to sprout. Is it sun or darkness and how long does it take? |
| Lavender (Lavandula) is one of those easy plants to grow, but germinating seeds can be rather challenging. The seeds require a pre-germination cold treatment, then light and heat to germinate. Here's how: Mix seeds together in moistened growing medium, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 4-6 weeks. Then sow just on the surface of moistened seed starting mix and press in with your finger. Keep trays or pots at 55F-65F and seedlings will appear in 15-90 days. If you've already sown your seeds in flats, cover the flats with plastic wrap and place them in the refrigerator for six week (or in an unheated garage for the prescribed time). Then provide average household warmth until seedlings appear. As soon as seeds sprout remove the plastic wrap and place the flats under a source of artificial light.
