We are in zone 5. Deer are abundant in our yard- what type of inexpensive fencing/deterrent works best in getting our vegetable plants to maturity?

Some gardeners report success using either home-made garlic and/or pepper based sprays or the commercially marketed repellents. In my experience however it takes a fence about eight or nine feet tall to keep them out of the garden for the best protection. You can make one fairly inexpensively using metal T stakes and electric fence wire (without a charger) and adding an outrigger to the top of the fence to make it harder to leap.
