| We have unsightly hedges that run along the front walk of our house that we are going to remove. We want to replace that area with a large bed of ivy with a Chinese Maple centered at our picture window. We are wondering if we can plant two or three of these trees together to get a more dramatic effect, quicker? The tree(s) will be far enough away from the house for space. |
| In most instances, the beauty of a Japanese maple is best appreciated when it is used alone as a specimen. Although tending to be purchased at a small size because these are relatively expensive trees, in time most of them do grow much larger. Crowding them would cramp their naturally beautiful shapes, possibly stress them due to ovvercompetition for light, water, air and nutrients and would also eventually mean all but one would have to be removed. Depending on the variety you purchase, your tree could grow anywhere from six inches to two feet per year -- most people find it is well worth the wait! |
