I have a lovely 3 yr old potentilla that is currently dormant. It is potted, root bound, and choked with weeds. How can I transplant this lovely plant? It's a wonderful plant that I would hate to lose. |
Now's the time to tackle that overgrown container, sift through the contents, toss the grass, and save the potentilla. The easiest approach is to dump the contents on some spread out newspapers and pick through it, beginning at one edge and working your way to where the sleeping potentilla roots are hiding. You'll find the roots of the plant if you follow the wiry stems from their ends to where they attach to the crown of the plant. Potentilla can be divided every 3-4 years by simply slicing the root mass into several pieces. Replant your salvaged potentilla crowns in sandy soil, water well, and wait for new foliage and stems to appear this spring. |
