I have a potato tree. It has purple flowers. The leaves have been falling off this winter. Is this normal? When should the tree be pruned?

Solanum macranthum, the potato tree, is native to the tropics and is grown as an oddity in the mild climates of California and Florida. It's not unusual for the older leaves to fall during the winter, to be replaced with new leaves in the spring. Depending upon care, your potato tree can grow 30' - 50' high. It does not need regular pruning.
