|What is the last frost date for the Capital District in New York State? I would like to start some seeds indoors and am not sure when to do so. Also, when can I direct sow the following: corn, radishes, carrots & beets. I used to live on Long Island & our last frost date was April 15th. Does this hold true for this area?|
|Your local County Extension (622-9820) should be able to provide you with the last average frost date for your area. Keep in mind that this is only an average and that the temperatures in your own garden will depend on its microclimate as well as vary from year to year, so use the date as a guide.
Radishes can be planted very early and will begin germinating when the soil temperature reaches about 50 degrees; beets can also be planted soon after the soil has thawed -- they germinate starting at about 45 degrees soil temperature; carrots are usually planted from early spring to mid July for an ongoing harvest; I would suggest direct seeding these three about three weeks before your last average frost date. Corn can be planted after the last frost date when the soil has warmed to at least 65 degrees.
