|I'm new to planting bulbs. I just wanted your recommendation of the best bulbs (general names) suited for my climate (Zone 9) that will thrive and reappear annually here in Southern California. So far, I know that tulips are out of the question, but can I dig them out and give them their rest period inside the refrigerator and plant them back out when the time is right?|
|Yes, tulips need a pre-chill, and if you dig, store, then chill prior to planting they should perform well for you. (Refrigerate for about 6 weeks prior to planting in December or early January.)
Other bulbs to plant include narcissus (scatter them and they'll naturalize an area), ornamental allium, freesia, fritillaria, amaryllis, hyacinth, crocus and muscari (grape hyacinth).
