We wish to obscure the view of a parking lot at the border of our property. There is a long chain fence, and we have a five foot wide ground area along it available for planting. We are Zone 10, near the sea, with plenty of sun, some wind. Could you please suggest plantings for this area that would provide us with privacy (and beauty)? Many thanks.

Have you considered a climbing vine, to cover the chain fence, in place of or in addition to some shrubs? Confederate jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) would make a suitable climbing vine, as would flame vine (Pyrostegia venusta).

Shrubs to consider are: Japanese pittosporum (P. tobira) and wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera).

Your Cooperative Extension office (ph no.305-248-3311) may have additional suggestions for you.
