A cultivar is a cultivated variety of a particular plant. Species used in horticulture retain the name of the wild plants from which they were derived. However, cross-breeding, selection, cloing, and other procedures have resulted in the proliferation of cultivated varieties, or cultivars, of many such species. A true cultivar retains its distinguishing characteristics from generation to generation. A cultivar's name is preceded by the abbreviation cv.
