Melons need full sun and a very rich soil that is moist yet well drained. Plant them a week or two after the last expected frost date when the soil has warmed because they are heat lovers and will not tolerate cold. Some gardeners use black plastic to try to warm the soil a bit faster in the spring. You can plant seeds or transplants in the garden. If you start seeds indoors, wait until just a week or two before the frost date to do it because they grow very quickly. All of the melons Burpee offers taste great ( Ambrosia is my favorite for taste but everyone has their own favorite), so select one that appeals to you. Be sure to allow them plenty of space.
