| We are beginning a new compost pile. We recently dug up sod to extend our garden area and want to know if we can put this sod in our compost pile. If so, do we need to chop it into small pieces? |
| Many turfgrasses, such as Bermuda, have tenacious and invasive root systems that can live to spread in your garden soil. The tiniest piece of root tissue can live and spread. If you create "hot" compost piles that reach temperatures of 140-160 degrees F for several days, they can kill the roots. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it. Knock the soil off into the compost pile, but don't put the roots in. |
