Is there a list of what vegetables are best to start indoors and what vegetables are best to direct sow?

Direct sow root crops (beets, carrots, turnips, onions). Tomatoes, peppers and eggplants benefit from the jumpstart of being started inside. Most others, such as squash, melons, lettuces, can go either way! Determine the days to maturity of the crop you want to plant. This info is usually on seed packets or in catalog descriptions. If it's longer than your growing season, or close to it, then it's helpful to start the plant inside. Root crops are always sown directly--they just don't transplant well.
