To rejuvenate privet, trim it short in very early spring. To keep the new growth dense and compact, begin very early to train it, as you would a new hedge, by clipping it regularly to force it to branch near the base. Maintain a wider width at the bottom than at the top so that light can reach the lower branches. This will help keep the plant well leafed at the base.
