I would like some general info on the Sky Pencil Holly - height, width, growing conditions, water, sun/shade, etc. |
A unique form of Japanese holly (Ilex crenata), 'Sky Pencil' has a naturally narrow growth pattern. It grows 10 feet tall and approximately 2.5-3.0 feet wide at maturity. It's a tall, multistemmed, narrow, evergreen shrub with lustrous, dark evergreen leaves typical of the species. Females produce small, solitary, dull greenish-white flowers in May to June, in leaf axils of current season's growth. A berry-like, dark purple drupe, 1/4 inch in diameter, ripens in September or October. Prefers light, moist but well-drained, slightly acid soils in either sun or shade. Transplants easily and needs no pruning to maintain growth habit. The only problem might be chlorosis if planted in soils that are too alkaline. |
