My Wandering Jew seems to be stringy and is constantly "dying" at the base while further out on the stems it seems really healthy. The base stems seems to dry out even though the soil is damp. Do you have any suggestions?

Wandering Jew (Tradescantia) is a trailing plant that's excellent for indoors in front of a bright window. Most of the growth comes at the ends of the trailing stems. To encourage new growth in the center of the plant you'll need to pinch or cut the stems back. It isn't unusual for the center of Tradescantia plants to dry out if the air is warm and dry. You can prevent this by misting the plant with plain water every few days to increase humidity around it. If your plant is several years old you may want to root some of the cut stems in water or moist potting soil and start new plants to replace the old, worn out plant.
