| My husband and I would like to try the old fashion above the grown planting of potatoes. The one that you plant under straw and |
then moves the straw and just pick up the potatoes. We are not quit sure what we need to do.Could you help us please. Can we use any potatoes? We bought Yaukon Gold.
|The tidiest way to do this is to use some sort of container, either a large pot or a wire cage to keep the materials in place on windy days. Put about six inches of soil and old leaves or straw in the bottom, add your potatoes and cover with six inches of the same. When they sprout and grow three or four inches, cover them with another six inches of material -- use whatever you have at hand as long as it is light and fluffy. Continue as the plant grows until you can reach in and steal tiny potatoes ( do not disturb the plant, just steal the spuds). Eventually the plant will die back, at which point you can harvest real potatoes. Enjoy!|
