| I have two cedar window boxes in front of our home, and when I plant flowers this year, do I place them in the boxes still in the pots I purchased them in, or dispose of the pots and fill the boxes with soil? Friends plant them in their pots, and fill the spaces with moss, others use soil? What would you advise? |
| The method you choose will depend upon what you're growing. If you plan to use annuals in the window boxes, you can leave them in the pots and bury the pots in potting soil or disguise them with moss. Annuals live for a short time and generally their root systems are small. Some have short bloom periods, too, so you can pull them up when the show is over and plop a new pot in its place. If you want to plant perennials, you'll do the plants a favor by unpotting them and planting directly in potting soil in the window boxes. This will allow the plant roots to stretch and explore for food and moisture. Plants growing in containers usually require frequent watering so check the boxes every few days, especially if they're in afternoon sunshine and the weather is hot. |
