| How can I avoid having my bulbs sprout early this year (last year I planted them in Oct or November, and some came up early in December. I was planning to keep them in the ground this year, but do I have to pull them all up? |
| Bulbs sprout when their internal clocks tell them it's time. Other than delaying the planting, I can't think of any other way to keep them from sprouting early. Spring flowering bulbs sometimes produce foliage many weeks before they're ready to bloom, in response to warmish weather. If the weather suddenly gets cold, the foliage just sits and waits. When things warm up again, the growing resumes and the bulbs bloom right on schedule. I don't think I'd dig the bulbs up - they may settle down and bloom on time if left in the ground all year long.
