Moss or mold can be caused by a number of reasons, possibly in combination. It can be a sign that the soil is overly acidic, or that it is compacted or poorly drained. It can be a sign that the fertility level is too low. It may also be a sign that the location is a shady one where grass simply won't grow well. You might want to run some basic soil tests and then, in addition to evaluating the location, make any necessary changes. Your county extension (424-9485) should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results.
