An acquaintance recommended a flowering potato plant for my sunny planters on the front porch instead of geraniums. What is it? My geraniums always turn brown before fully blooming.

Flowering Potato Vine is Solanum variegata. It's a colorful plant that adds a tropical look to patio trellises and baskets. The plant produces 4' trailing foliage splashed with gold and fragrant clusters of star-shaped flowers. it will thrive in full sunshine and ample water during the growing season. You can order Potato Vine from Burpee online at http://www.burpee.com, or phone toll-free (800) 888-1447.

If your geraniums are turning brown, perhaps there's too much reflected heat, or not enough water to keep them happy. You might try using potting soil (if you're using garden soil now) and watering when the top of the soil begins to dry out. Geraniums need some elbow room, too, so don't plant them too closely together.

Hope your planters provide lots of summer color for you!
