| Potatoes actually take quite a bit of space to produce large amounts because you will need lots of plants, but you can certainly grow them in a limited space such as a half barrel. Simply place about six inches of soil and other organic matter such as chopped leaves or straw in the bottom of the container, then add your seed potatoes. Top with about four to six inches of a little soil and plenty of organic matter and then water it to settle the ingredients. When the plants sprout and show about four inches of green, cover them with the same mix. Repeat until the plants flower and fade, then dump out the barrel contents and harvest your potatoes. You can also reach in a bit early and carefully steal baby potatoes, leaving the remainder to continue to grow. This same no dig technique can be used to grow them in a wire cage over an area of about three by three feet or so in the garden. |
