Although black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) are reputed to be difficult to plant around due to the allelopathic effect of the juglone given off by the roots, there are many plants that will do just fine around them. Among plants to avoid would be ericaceous plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons, plants in the tomato family (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes) and plants known to have trouble competing with tree roots or growing in shade in general. The following web site http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/nur... includes a long list of juglone-tolerant plants to consider.
