During the winter, I have had either a rabbit or groundhog damage 10-20 small trees on my property. The trees are of mixed variety (He was not shy!). The bark has been chewed off in parts of the base or the complete base of the trees. Can I save these trees this summer? How? Someone recommended I spray the bare areas with tree coating used for tree trimming. |
Unfortunately, wound coating will not help in this situation and there may in fact be nothing at all you can do except wait and see if any of them can recover. In cases where the bark is stripped all the way around the prognosis is not good at all, it improves in inverse proportion to the amount of damage. In the future you might consider protecting your trees with wire mesh. In the meantime, make sure the soil fertility is what it should be, take care not to over apply nitrogen, and water the trees if the season turns dry. I'm sorry about your trees! |
