Tree Roots on Surface - Knowledgebase Question

I have roots that are protruding from the ground. How do I correct this problem?

Some trees, such as maples, are well known for their surface roots. In most cases this is actually the normal way the tree grows and nothing would need to be done. Covering the roots with soil would be only a temporary measure in any case because the roots would soon grow back to the surface.
