Your plant needs fairly rich, but light and fast-draining soil in order to thrive. Some good soil amendments include aged-compost or leaf mold. You can feed your plant during the growing season with a diluted liquid fertilizer such as fish emulsion or manure-tea, or you can side-dress with compost or aged manure. Side-dress means to place an inch or two around the plant so watering or rainfall will allow nutrients from the organic matter to leach into the soil and feed the roots.
