In your cold-winter climate you'll want to grow some fairly hardy perennials. Some of my favorites include asters, Campanula, Coreopsis, Dahlia, Dianthus, Echinacea (purple cone flower), Gladiolus, Liatris, Phlox, Rudbeckia (Gloriosa Daisy), Scabiosa and Achillea (yarrow).

These do best in sunny locations.
