I have and idea for a garden, I want to grow a "living clock" flower garden, the only problem is that I can not find any flowers that will open or close on each hour of the day, Do you have any information on which flowers would be best for this garden?...I live in the North Eastern part of Nevada. |
While it is theoretically possible to do what you have described, in practical terms it is a bit difficult. You can certainly start with morning glories, four o'clocks and moonflowers (which open in late afternoon for the night). The Victorians tried to create these and I believe the inspiration came from work done by early botanists including Linneaus in Sweden. Sharon Lovejoy's book "Sunflower Houses: Garden Discoveries for Children of All Ages" (ISBN 0-934026-70-X) includes detailed instructions on creating a floral clock beginning on page 32. A brief look at Linneaus' work on flower blooming times can be found here: http://www.cbt.virginia.edu/tu... Unfortunately I can't find a sample plan from the Victorian era, but this should get you started. |
