Maples can be difficult to plant beneath because of their greedy root systems so you may find that using one or more large containers is a preferable approach to planting under your tree. Some shade plants to consider for summer color besides impatiens would be caladium, variegated ivy (Hedera helix), coleus, polka dot plant (Hippoestes), and bedding begonias as well as tuberous begonias. Trailing lobelia, New Guinea impatiens, and violas might also thrive if there is dappled light all day beneath the tree.
