Lupines grow best in areas with cool summers, and are very cold hardy. They need a rich, acidic, soil that is evenly moist yet well drained, meaning not soggy. They will grow in full sun, but in areas where summers are warm they may do better in partial shade. In zones 6 and 7, the warmer end of their range, they may be short lived where summers are hot. They tend to do better in the Pacific Northwest, for example, than on the east coast.
