We have this shrub/tree in our front and back yard. I have kids who tried to eat it and need to know if it's poisonous?

It looks rather like buckthorn, Rhamnus cathartica. Compare with this image. I don't know why anyone would plant it in a garden though. If that's what it is then no, don't let the kids eat it.

Thank you it is Buckthorn and I am confused as to why we have 3 in our yard! I don't know why they previous owners would want these!! Thank you for your help!
