|We just bought a house that has flower beds along the sides and the fence of the house. These beds are bordered by bricks. I want to get away from the brick look and have a more natural border/layout for these beds. What can I use? Is it possible to raise the beds and have no border? We want to keep the clean/organized look, just something alittle more natural.|
|You can remove the bricks and dig a shallow trench (4-6" deep) to outline the gardens. This will help define them, and help a little in keeping the grass from encroaching. You'll probably need to redig the ditches once or twice during the season. You could also raise the soil level up slightly, creating mounded gardens. Either way, I suggest a thick layer of mulch to help control weeds and "dress up" the gardens. You could also use a low-growing groundcover such as creeping myrtle or Irish moss (Sagina subulata) around the perimeter of the beds.|
Congratulations on your new house!
