Tulips that have been grown in a pot can be carefully removed from the pot along with their roots and soil intact and planted directly in the ground. Plant them at the same level as they are growing in the pot and water them well after planting to settle the soil. They would then be allowed to grow, mature and ripen their foliage naturally and left in place to grow and bloom next spring. You would not need to dig them up.
