I have a crabapple tree in my front lawn. It is approximately 8 years old and has never flowered. I have never trimmed it.

Crabapples are such reliable bloomers, I am surprised that yours does not flower. Assuming it is healthy and vigorous overall, it is possible that it is planted in a frost pocket so that the buds are routinely nipped by a late frost.
