We have just planted 4 Trumpet Vines along a block wall and would like to know the best way to train them so they will spread across the wall. We would prefer not using a trellis. Any information would be appreciated.

Brugmansia, or Trumpet Vine, is a vigorous grower and can produce up to 15' of growth in a single season. The vines will need some kind of support so they can twine. You might consider providing a wire "curtain" in front of the block wall, or some wooden stakes with a network of string or wire for the vines to twine around for support. Once the plants become established they will naturally drape over the wall and new growth will attach itself to old vines. But to get things started, plan to provide at least some temporary support for the plants. All this work will be rewarded - you'll be delighted with the fragrant flowers this plant produces!
