I have just noticed that my healthy looking indoor spider plant has very many small brown scale-like things along the stems. They have kind of a shell and are very easily removed. I can't tell if they are bugs or some kind of disease. What to do?

I'll bet you've correctly identified the pests on your spider plant. Scale insects look hard brown bumps and their favorite places to live are on stems and the undersides of leaves. Scraping or picking off individual scales is time consuming but very effective in controlling the population. Because of the hard shells, insectide sprays are not very effective against these pests. I'd suggest continuing to pick the scales off as you find them.
