I would like to plant clematis and I'm wondering how much space I should leave between each plant. I'll be planting them on the side of my deck and the area on which they'll grow is 10ft wide by about 8ft high. How many clematis should I plant in order to give them sufficient room to grow without having the area look empty?

The answer to your question depends on which type of clematis you select because different types have different mature sizes; in addition, some need to be pruned back hard, meaning close to the ground, every spring and others need just a little tip pruning each year. If you opted for a smaller variety that grows in the 8 to 10 foot height range, you might plant them about three feet apart.
